Digital Storyteller

Start Date: Immediately

Location: Washington, DC, highly preferred; New York City or Los Angeles also preferred. Qualified candidates who live elsewhere in the U.S. and would like to work remotely will be considered.

About Bend the Arc:

Bend the Arc is a movement of over 125,000 progressive Jews across America who are working together to achieve our vision: to transform our country to be inclusive, equitable, and supportive of the dignity of every person across race, class, gender and faith. We are the only national Jewish organization focused exclusively on social change in the U.S.

For years, we’ve worked to build a more just society. Now we’re fighting for the soul of our nation and rising up in solidarity with everyone threatened by the Trump’s attacks on immigrants, Muslims, people of color, our communities, and our democracy.

The Bend the Arc family of organizations consists of Bend the Arc: Jewish Action, our 501(c)(4) organizing and advocacy arm; Bend the Arc: Jewish Action PAC, a political action committee dedicated to supporting candidates for federal office who champion our values; and Bend the Arc: A Jewish Partnership for Justice, our 501(c)(3) education and leadership arm. Headquartered in New York City, we have offices in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and San Francisco, with volunteer-led local groups organizing nationwide.

About the Position:

Bend the Arc is growing a national Jewish movement of Jewish resistance at the local, state, and national levels. Our 2018-2020 strategy is focused on mobilizing the Jewish community to defeat the Trump Administration, stop white nationalist policies, and build a true multiracial democracy where all people can live, love, and thrive. We’re expanding our distributed field program, our Washington advocacy, and our leadership development programs for young Jewish activists and Jewish leaders of color.

Bend the Arc is seeking a Storyteller to engage, inspire, and communicate with Bend the Arc’s community of volunteer leaders, donors, and activists across multiple areas of work, from issue and electoral campaigns to leadership programs to our upcoming 2020 conference. As a key member of our growing communications and digital team, you’ll work closely with staff, issue experts, volunteers, and consultants to create a full range of multimedia and print communications.

Do you have a knack for crafting stories in a variety of channels and media — email, web, video, social media, one pagers, presentations, blogs, contributed articles — that capture the hearts and minds of diverse audiences? Is your writing and editing clear and sharp? Are you also skilled in an area of media production, like graphic design or video? If so, read on!

Here’s what you’d do in the job:

  • Be creative: envision, research, draft, and develop print and multimedia content that drives engagement, resulting in our audience learning more, taking action, and donating.
  • Project manage: working with teams across the organization, including field, development, and programs, as well as external vendors to produce emails, graphics, web copy, blog posts, videos, one pagers and print collateral.
  • Identify stories: find compelling stories and story leads from across our network. Brainstorm compelling themes, headlines, and teasers that help our movement see itself in all of our diversity while driving traffic to help us reach our target audiences.
  • Build platforms: support the development of campaign and program-specific websites, through managing website developers, writing content, and photo selection.
  • Keep us up to date: maintain Bend the Arc’s national websites with engaging content that capture the latest stories of our work and our community. Track analytics to learn what’s working and optimize our websites and content.
  • Hold high standards: maintain accuracy in our messaging and consistent quality in our voice and visual style, from following our design standards to choosing great photos for content.

You could be great for this job if you have:

  • At least 3-5 years of relevant experience (paid or unpaid) producing digital and print content in a political, nonprofit, or advocacy setting.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills, whether in 280 characters or in 1,000 words.
  • Experience working with vendors like graphic designers, video editors, website developers, and printers.
  • Knowledge of trends and best practices for storytelling and content creation for websites, email, Facebook and Twitter.
  • Proficiency using content management systems and constituent relationship management platforms (Bend the Arc uses NationBuilder).
  • Knowledge of basic HTML and ability to resize images.
  • Creativity, flexibility and comfort working in a fast-paced and sometimes complex environment.
  • Commitment to social justice, to the values and goals of Bend the Arc, and to working at a values-based organization with a high emphasis on mutual respect, intentional workplace culture, and a commitment to racial equity.

Although not required, a strong candidate may have some of the following:

  • Graphic design chops, proficiency using Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Video production or editing chops, proficiency using Adobe Premiere.
  • Project management experience and the ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
  • Participation in social movements, progressive advocacy, or community organizing.
  • Racial equity or anti-oppression training and/or a demonstrated commitment to anti-oppression practices.
  • Experience with online fundraising.

Compensation and Hours:

  • This is a full-time position, with occasional evening or weekend work based on need. The annual salary range is $48,000-58,000 DOE, and includes paid time off and health benefits.
