We are ThinkShout, a Portland-grown, certified B Corp dedicated to delivering exceptional web development, design, user experience, and strategy to the nonprofits and forward-thinking organizations that inspire us.

We are looking for a Director of Design to manage our growing team of creatives and lead our design practice. As Director of Design, you will focus on improving our approach to UX and UI, building more effective processes that result in exciting outcomes for our team and clients. Together with the team, you will be instrumental in developing an innovative, open, and exciting space for design and ThinkShout.

The Director of Design reports to the Chief Strategy Officer.

What We’re Looking For:
  • An ability to mentor, lead, and cultivate a growing team of highly experienced designers who are working across multiple client projects at a time
  • A desire to develop and refine new processes for design within the team as well as across teams, with a specific focus on the design to development handoff
  • Experience leading and executing creative deliverables for complex digital platforms, including all critical UI/UX components
  • Dexterity with design programs including Figma, Sketch, and Adobe Creative Suite
  • General understanding of WordPress and/or Drupal as well as how designs are applied in HTML and CSS
  • Comfort in leading and facilitating discovery workshops in partnership with strategy team
  • Experience applying emerging design approaches in innovative ways to solve nonprofit and mission-driven organizational needs.
  • Ability to collaborate, learn, and share new skills that advance team expertise
  • Flexibility with context switching from client work to team leadership
  • Commitment and experience with nonprofits and/or clients who are focused primarily on their impact in the world rather than their profit margins

How You’ll Spend Your Time
  • Leadership: You’ll set the vision, direction, and cadence for our design team’s day-to-day work and longterm goals. You’ll oversee the quality of our design service offerings for the company, represent our team during sales pitches, and partner with our director team to consistently move ThinkShout forward in our mission of building a curious, transparent, inclusive, optimistic, and compassionate company.
  • Process Innovation: You’ll prioritize improving ThinkShout’s design process with a specific focus on streamlining how we design for efficient front-end development. You’ll team up with a front-end lead to significantly increase collaboration between front-end and design during the creation of design comps with a goal of implementing designs more efficiently and reducing the amount of time needed for quality assurance and acceptance testing.
  • Service Offerings: You’ll define, build, and maintain design service offerings for ThinkShout’s client work, which could include any design deliverable within a client’s ecosystem, eg, design systems, creative direction, asset libraries, style guides, brand strategy, and more.
  • Management & Cultivation: You’ll pay close attention to what design team members need to be successful and provide crucial mentorship and guidance. You’ll celebrate growth and offer constructive feedback that is foundational to a trusting, transparent, and caring team. You’ll identify areas of growth that best serve our team and our clients towards agency goals and ensure that we are skilled and staffed to fulfill those needs.
  • Client Work: This role will mostly focus on team, company, and community leadership, but you’ll also lead design for select clients and support our team on production work when necessary.
  • Community Engagement: You’ll build ThinkShout’s creative voice beyond the boundaries of our company, presenting at conferences, engaging in community events, and developing relationships with other thought leaders who are leading with anti-racist practices and working to put people and the planet first.
