USA TODAY Opinion is looking for an experienced editor to anchor the commentary component of the Hidden Common Ground project being done in conjunction with Public Agenda. Through national polling and detailed reporting, the project aims to counter the narrative that Americans are hopelessly divided and incapable of resolving critical issues. This part-time contract editor will oversee the selection, editing and publication of project-related commentary, ensuring that it is up to USA TODAY Opinion standards.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Generating a steady stream of op-eds that steer the national conversation toward Hidden Common Ground solutions on immigration, health care and other major issues, and that ensure the 35%-40% of voters who identify as moderates don’t get drowned out by the partisan extremes.
  • Compiling a roster of centrist writers with track records of accuracy, logic and clearheaded prose.
  • Ensuring that the writers represent gender, racial and geographic diversity within the center-left to center-right spectrum.
  • Keeping track of page view and engagement numbers as a way of measuring the audience for these op-eds.

This is a one-year contract covering the 12 months leading up to Election Day 2020.
