Nathan James is looking for a skilled Forecasting Lead to join our team in providing best-in-class forecasting and communication in our growing Operations function.

People-first company, design-first home.

We are a design-first, home furnishing company focusing on the habits of urban dwellers and first time home buyers. We pride ourselves on the best in class customer happiness, providing the highest possible quality products that are affordable for the majority and assembly that isn't dreadful.

As a people-first company, we understood from day one the importance of being fully distributed. We encourage everyone to work in whichever manner that helps them perform their best.

ABOUT THE ROLE

A person who will be happy, fulfilled, and successful in this role and as a remote team member at Nathan James is someone who values life and identity outside of work.

You’ll be working closely with the Division Owner for Inventory Management to build out a statistical forecasting system, predicting weekly what we’ll sell across our e-commerce channels.  You will be responsible for keeping the forecast tuned and up to date with new information from all our stakeholders and data sources, and for communicating out to our colleagues what is changing in our forecast and why.  You will also be responsible for organizing wide-ranging S&OP processes and will be a key driver of introducing this process slowly across the company with as little disruption and as much benefit as possible.

This role will experience a lot of change over the next 12-24 months as we build a new forecasting system, and you’ll be expected to relish those changes and hunt out opportunities for improvement from all angles.  While you’ll start forecasting partly in spreadsheets, we will quickly pivot to a brand new system, likely using Alteryx and SQL, in preparation for a growing product catalog in 2022.  One of our first projects in 2021 is tracking forecast accuracy, so you will need to be confident in pivoting as needed to make sure we’re driving forecast improvements for the long term.

During training, you’ll be expected to be proactive in your process and learn quickly. Once fully up-to-speed (2-3 months), you’ll manage the forecast for ~200 products across a couple of platforms, while improving and building out new parts of the system.  Equally key, you will need to identify what data is important for each group of stakeholders across our organization and get it to them - and you know that “getting someone data” is useless unless it is clear, concise, and interesting to read.

ABOUT US

We have a rhythm to our work and a very low turnover rate — we have yet to have a single team member opt out. Your voice matters to us. We make change from fresh perspectives and appreciate new viewpoints, so you should feel comfortable speaking up about your values and goals.

We’re ready for the ongoing work that goes into building an inclusive, supportive place for you to do the best work of your career. Our values, workplace and our benefits are designed to support a sustainable, healthy relationship with your work. Our operating values provide the framework we use in building a healthy, resilient organization.

You can expect a mindful onboarding process with ramp-up and time to learn. You can expect a team that listens, and to be heard. You can expect to give and provide direct feedback. You can expect to work with good people. You can expect to be counted on. You can expect to do your best work and build a career here.

ABOUT YOU

We’re looking for a strong technical mind with a passion for data and stats. You balance your analytical know-how with great data visualization experience, a keen eye for patterns and trends, and a fascination with consumer behavior.  You’re a great problem-solver and are used to working within constraints - how do we get the best results with the least time and resources?

You’re deep in the forecasting mindset.  You have opinions on forecasting methods, sales outcomes, accuracy calculations, and how to predict the tricky stuff (slow movers, new launches, products that always seem to be on sale or out of stock).  You’re comfortable with the difference between a demand and a sales forecast, and you know what constraints might take us from one to the other.  You love taking the time to keep up with best practices and innovative methods.  When we say you’re going to help drive the introduction of S&OP, you hear that we’ve got a rare opportunity to get it right from the beginning and you can’t wait to buckle down with a lot of research and get started.

You have at least intermediate knowledge of SQL and know your way around a database.  You’re familiar with the logical structures used in coding (even if you can’t write a program yourself), so using a tool to build out repeatable workflows is right up your alley.  You’re extremely comfortable with the more advanced capabilities of Excel.  As a bonus, you might have experience with Airtable and Alteryx, but you definitely know how to put together a report to communicate key statistical data and trends to high-level stakeholders.

We would like to see a minimum of three years experience in forecasting roles, as well as some clear leadership & communication experience.  This may be all in the same roles or it may not, but you’re ready to hit the ground running on the forecasting/reporting side and would look forward to mentoring a small team in the next few years.

For this role we do require that your normal workday has at least 2 hours overlap with the MST workday (currently UTC-7) without impinging on your personal/family life.

This is a remote role, since we are a remote company! You’re free to work where you work best, anywhere in the world: home office, coworking space, or coffee shops. That hinges on effective independent data analysis, self-discipline, and comfort with open communication.

BENEFITS & PERKS

Our benefits are all aimed at supporting a life well lived both at work and away from work.

We’re all about reasonable working hours, sharing, ample vacation time, wellness, education, comfort, and giving back. We offer competitive salaries, for a similar role in the country you will be working from.

HOW TO APPLY

Please submit an application here that speaks directly to this position. There are no right answers or cookie-cutter expectations. A cover letter is not required, but those that clearly demonstrate how Nathan James would be a great fit for you and how you would be a great fit for us, will be given full attention and are highly appreciated.

You’ll hear from us about advancement to a video screen and then on to a work sample, where you’ll get a chance to see the types of challenges you would be solving in this role. Our interviews are all remote by Whereby video chat (no software needed), with your future colleagues, on your schedule.

We appreciate your consideration into having Nathan James be part of your career.

Our open conversation starts with this post. We look forward to hearing from you.
