The Red Hat Application Platform Support team is looking for a skilled JEE expert to join us as a Middleware Software Maintenance Engineer in Canada. In this role, you will use your deep functional expertise and solid industry experience to assist customers with middleware code and architecture and provide a high level of technical assistance to ensure that they get the most out of our offerings. You'll serve as a trusted partner to our enterprise customers by offering developer-to-developer assistance for Red Hat Middleware software. In addition, you'll work closely with senior engineers and developers to fix and improve code and provide highly technical solutions to support requests. As a Middleware Software Maintenance Engineer, you will also write patches, provide Red Hat Middleware updates, and contribute ideas through participation in an open and collaborative team environment. Work location is flexible - there is a Red Hat office in Toronto; however we will also consider home-based, remote work for outstanding engineers.


  • Learn new technologies and provide KBase articles, pushing technical knowledge out to our customers and the community
  • Provide high-level, detailed technical assistance to ensure that our customers get the most out of our middleware offerings
  • Engage and collaborate with open source developers around the world
  • Offer developer-to-developer assistance
  • Work alongside in-house developers, write new code, fix and improve existing code, provide highly technical solutions, and contribute to the Red Hat Middleware and open source software communities
  • Serve as a technical point of contact for middleware technologies within Red Hat
  • Develop patches and feature requests to provide upstream to the community and downstream to customers
  • Advise customers on architectural design decisions
  • Work with other open source projects to help customers integrate

  • 3+ years of professional experience in a technical support, development, engineering, or quality assurance (QA) organization
  • Experience with JEE, and namely with Contexts and Dependency Injections (CDI), Java Persistence API (JPA), REST, transactions in Java Message Service (JMS), Apache Maven, and Git
  • Experience with application servers like IBM WebSphere, Red Hat Middleware, Oracle WebLogic, or Apache Tomcat
  • Outstanding troubleshooting and debugging skills and passion for problem solving and investigation
  • Ability and willingness to learn new open source middleware technologies
  • Clear and effective communication skills in English
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with customers, third-party vendors, and Red Hat's associates

The following are considered a plus:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or computer science; equivalent experience within the enterprise IT sector will also be considered
  • Experience with business process management (BPM), jBPM, or business rules management systems (BRMS) like Drools and iLog
  • Experience with messaging tools like IBM WebSphere MQ, HornetQ, or Apache ActiveMQ
  • Experience with technologies like Docker, containers, Kubernetes, and Red Hat OpenShift
