Hi, we're CompanyCam

We create simple-to-use, visual-first communication and accountability tools for contractors. Imagine a B2B SaaS app that doesn’t look like garbage, built by a team of capable, laid back people.

The Role

We're looking for sharp, self-motivated, kind, problem-solving Product Designers to join our team. You'll use your experience and expertise in shipping well-designed and successful SaaS apps (not just websites) to help CompanyCam succeed.

We're not looking for one-trick ponies either. We need holistic Product Designers: you'll do user research, UX design, UI design, interaction design, microcopy, and HTML+CSS writing while keeping both user and business goals in mind. We know it's a broad role so don't worry if you're not an expert in all those things (we like T-shaped designers). You'll also be working alongside a talented team of Product Designers who deeply care to help each other grow as holistic Product Designers.

To give you and idea of what you'd be doing day-to-day, here are some things we have worked on recently:

  • Built an experience for multiple companies to collaborate on projects in CompanyCam.
  • Worked in collaboration with marketing designers to rethink brand colors that can be useful to both marketing and product design teams.
  • Published design tokens for use in our mobile and web apps (size, color, spacing, etc.).
  • Created the ability for users to create custom photo reports in the mobile app (previously was only available in our web app).
  • Researched and implemented the ability for users to use CompanyCam projects and photos on their own company website to promote their work.
  • Started a design system to provide Product Designers/Engineers with tools to build faster and share a common design language.

Why CompanyCam?

Did you wake up this morning with a burning desire to create apps for contractors? No? I didn’t think so. I admit, it’s not something one thinks about without some prompting. But bear with me for a moment...

Contractors are everywhere. They build our homes, they literally put roofs over our heads, they wire up our electricity, give us access to the internet, fix our plumbing and AC, paint our homes…the list goes on.

At CompanyCam, you’ll work with intelligent, kind people to make contractors' work easier. You'll create time for them so they can get shit done and spend more time with their families. Sound corny? You’ll find that midwesterner ethos permeate our culture (we’re based in Lincoln, NE), so if you can’t hang with that, no hard feelings, but this probably isn’t the role for you.

Working at CompanyCam

Our Product and Engineering departments do things a little differently.

We use Basecamp’s Shape Up method (fused with empowered product teams a la Marty Cagan's Inspired) to organize and execute our work. That means you’ll work in a close-knit team consisting of a Product Manager, a Product Designer, and other Engineers on an area of the product in 6-week cycles. During cycles you'll spend about 60% of your time discovering (alongside your team) what CompanyCam should build and 40% of your time bringing those things to life. After each cycle you’ll get a 1-2 week cool-down where you’ll pursue educational opportunities, work on pet projects, or tweak some user experiences that have been nagging at you.

Sounds nice, right? No sprinting, no scrumming, no death by 1,000 meetings. We protect our designers' time, treat them like adults, and trust them to get their work done. We’re also big on not overworking people. Put in your eight hours of focused, quality work and then TURN. SLACK. OFF. No nights and weekends.

Our larger company culture is also refreshingly chill. We have fun, learn from each other, and don’t take ourselves too seriously.

We cover the important stuff too. We pay well, offer unlimited vacation, meaningful equity, health insurance, and other benefits. If you're local or down to move, we’re custom remodeling a new office space in the Lincoln Haymarket area that you’ll love. If you're remote (most of the engineering team is), we’re well set up with great conference room video equipment so you'll feel like you’re there with us, and once life is back to normal we’ll fly you in a few times a year to hang out.

What We Ask of You

You must…

  • Show up: give us your best and have the courage to do difficult but necessary stuff.
  • Grow up: take responsibility, learn continuously, and have a growth mindset.
  • Do good: treat your co-workers and customers the way you want to be treated.
  • Have experience and expertise in user research, UX design, UI design, interaction design, microcopy, and HTML+CSS with a strong portfolio of real, shipped apps.
  • Code. Currently, our designers write most of our CSS/Sass, while working directly in React and/or React Native. This goes beyond "working knowledge". You need to be comfortable writing production CSS.
  • Be a great communicator: you "work in the open", don't take critique personally, and can solicit, manage, and appropriately respond to feedback from stakeholders, users, and fellow designers.
  • Reside permanently and currently somewhere in the continental USA. Alas, we're not set up to hire designers outside of the US.
It'd be nice if you…

  • Have experience working with styled-components.
  • Live in Lincoln, NE or are interested in relocating (we'd provide assistance).
  • Have experience working in a Product-led Growth environment (or B2C environment) and can leverage that experience here.

How to Apply

Hit the apply button to tell us about yourself and about what you can bring to CompanyCam. We also want to see a portfolio that shows your best work and the process of how you got there. We'd prefer to see real, shipped apps over hypothetical projects to judge your ability, but if you can wow us with something else – that's fine. Just make sure you highlight your thought process and decision making.

We're accepting applications until Friday, January 29th, 2020 at 10PM US-Central time. There is no benefit to applying early, so take your time.

What happens next?

We will review all the applications and you should hear from us by February 5th about advancing to the interview stage – which will be all remote and include a small design challenge.

We're hoping to make an offer in February with a start date in March.
