Job Description

Position Overview  

As the Senior Director, Talent & Leadership Development you will lead our strategy to build KIPP regions’ capacity to develop their school leadership pipelines and talent practices. You will manage a team that partners with regions to create systems of leadership development and implements the KIPP Principal-in-Residence program, a two-year residency program that prepares rising school leaders to be founders or successor principals. This position reports to the Senior Director, Regional Talent Systems.

Key Responsibilities and Duties   

Talent Strategy Development  

  • Support the development of KIPP’s vision for a comprehensive people model that supports KIPP regions to meet their student outcome and growth goals, while centering equity and anti-racism 
  • Continue to build out KIPP’s leadership development strategy to set direction for the advancement of school leadership pipeline practices 
  • Lead the evolution of KIPP’s leadership development practices 
  • Own and iterate on the design of KIPP’s principal-in-residence program and the strategy for scaling the KIPP PIR program across 28 separate KIPP regions (regions are akin to independent school districts) 

Program Management and Execution 

  • Partner with KIPP regions to build their leadership development systems so that they create robust and equitable talent pipelines  
  • Intensively support regions in their design and launch of their principal-in-residence program, including:  
  • Facilitating planning sessions and collaboration calls with regions to build out the program design 
  • Supporting regions in developing the program design elements in alignment with the KIPP PIR model, e.g., a list of critical skills for principals to be ready for leadership, an assessment toolkit that diagnoses proficiency on said skills, approach to mentor school leader development, formal learning scope and sequence, etc. 
  • Co-developing program-related tools, like a talent tracking system 
  • Supporting regions in creation of program content, which may include formal learning content, mentor school leader training, etc. 
  • Providing regular feedback and coaching and implementation of the PIR program, including periodic step-backs 
  • Devise and implement a strategy for principal-in-residence program maintenance and management after the two-year launch supports and a strategy for pre-PIR program launch 
  • Progress monitor delivery of supports using impact data, feedback from KIPP regions, and an anti-racism approach to evaluate and adjust strategies and supports 
  • With the Senior Director, Knowledge and Impact, run long-term program evaluation to iterate on design and execution of programs 

Team Leadership 

  • With the Senior Director, Regional Talent Systems, support in leading the Network Talent Team to ensure cohesive execution of the team vision and collaboration across the team and the overall KIPP Foundation, including support of team meetings, progress monitoring, and overall strategy  
  • Manage a team of four direct reports who are implementing KIPP’s school leadership development strategy to ensure each member of the team is flourishing and unleashing their full potential for the benefit of KIPPsters 
  • Manage the workload, resourcing and supports to team members to enable them to propel regional impact  
  • Connect teammates to resources and look across the KIPP Foundation to ensure collaboration and cohesion of strategy

  • You are a culturally competent people manager who can lead high-quality team execution while effectively managing across lines of difference  
  • You can set and realize visions and strategies in alignment with org-wide priorities 
  • You can collect, analyze and use quantitative and qualitative data to shape continuous improvements and strategic decision-making 
  • You have experience and skill in navigating complex senior stakeholder management across multiple teams and functions 
  • You have a record of results in managing and training principals (highly preferred)

Work Conditions 

  • COVID-19 considerations: Vaccinations and masks required in shared workspaces and job-related travel. 
  • Travel requirements: 20-30% (this will depend on the current public health recommendations and employee/manager discretion on risks associated with travel) 
  • Full/part-time, non/exempt role 

Start Date: Please note we are seeking to fill this role with an anticipated start date of June/July 2022

Location 

It is preferred, but not mandatory for this role to be based out of a KIPP Foundation office. This role also has the option of working from a remote office full time.  KIPP Foundation office is in NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington DC.
