The Red Hat Open Innovation Labs (Labs) team is looking for a Site Reliability Engineer to join us either remotely, or in Boston, MA. In this role, you will work as part of a dynamic, diverse, exceptional, and global team that solves big problems for our customers, partners, and communities using the power of open source. You’ll work with some of the industry's newest technologies around containers and industry-leading enterprise open source solutions, including Red Hat Ansible Automation, Docker, Kubernetes, and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, software-defined networking (SDN) and traditional networking equipment, core servers and virtualization, operating systems, and Red Hat OpenStack Platform. As a Site Reliability Engineer, you will help us apply all of these technologies to all major public cloud providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Microsoft Azure, as well as our own internal private cloud. You’ll be responsible for developing, maintaining, and operating the push-button infrastructure of our Labs. You’ll code and automate the traditional roles of a system administrator at scale. You will also consult with customers to teach them the art and science of site reliability engineering (SRE) to help them build great new teams and software. You’ll enable a wider open source community to contribute to the further development of our push-button infrastructure. Successful applicants must reside in a state where Red Hat is registered to do business.


  • Contribute to, develop, and expand the various client and server-side frameworks related to the push-button infrastructure running on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform and Red Hat OpenStack Platform
  • Serve as a leading contributor to automation of infrastructure management and help showcase excellent infrastructure as code (IaC) implementations using Red Hat Ansible Automation and other technologies
  • Work alongside customers, consulting with them on how to manage, deploy, and operate cloud solutions at scale using the principles of SRE
  • Work with a team of architects, consultants, and partners to design, deploy, and apply our solutions
  • Work with Red Hat's Quality Engineering (QE) and Productization teams to increase value and stability for our customers and users
  • Evaluate solutions and technologies; make recommendations and present reports
  • Maintain technical competency in all aspects of our technology and market
  • Mentor junior engineers at Red Hat and those among our customers, partners, and communities

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical discipline
  • Great written and verbal communication and mentoring skills
  • Experience with Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) software like Red Hat OpenStack Platform, and virtualization technologies like Red Hat Virtualization, oVirt, and VMware
  • Solid knowledge and experience with Linux operating system, preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or Fedora Core
  • Experience using public cloud solutions like AWS, Google Compute Engine (GCE), and Microsoft Azure
  • Direct Level 2 or Level 3 networking experience and knowledge; SDN knowledge is a plus
  • Working experience with shared storage technologies, including NFS, iSCSI, CIFS, and Red Hat Ceph Storage
  • System provisioning experience using PXE, Kickstart, and similar solutions; experience with Red Hat Satellite is a plus
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and other container tools is a big plus
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and follow industry trends
  • Ability to work on your own and as part of a team
  • Passion for open source software as a user or developer
  • Active online presence with an interest in open source community development
  • Willingness to travel 50-75% of the year within North America (NA) for various customer-facing and internal work efforts
  • Data center architecture and design knowledge and experience are a plus
