About you

We think you’re someone who…

  • is interested in solving technical problems, and enjoys figuring out not just what works, but why it works;
  • cares about privacy and security;
  • is able to explain complex problems to others in a clear way;
  • wants technology to work for everyone, and gets excited about making video calling more accessible;
  • enjoys collaborating with people from other fields (e.g., product design, front-end development, or customer support).

Our stack

We have built our video calls from the ground up, using a technology called WebRTC (it’s a way for two browsers to send data peer-to-peer). Our technology stack shortly consists of: React, Redux, Redux-Saga on the frontend, and Node (express, socket.io), PostgreSQL, and Redis on the backend, all hosted on Amazon Web Services with infrastructure-as-code in Terraform.

Don’t worry if these are unfamiliar to you, we are looking for people willing to learn, not people who know everything from before.

Your experience and background

You may have previously worked with cloud infrastructure, infrastructure-as-code, and/or backend development. You don’t need previous experience with infrastructure-as-code or Amazon Web Services to apply.

Specifically, we are looking for someone who:

  • has some experience creating backend applications for the cloud;
  • has experience communicating complicated technical solutions to others;
  • sees the value of working with infrastructure-as-code.

What you will work on

Your main focus will be creating backend applications and infrastructure. You will work closely with others in making sure we can provide secure and privacy-focused video calling to healthcare professionals and their patients.

Together with the rest of the Confrere team, these are some of the things you will be working on:

  • Developing and maintaining a distributed real-time system for video calling, while meeting the strict standards for security and privacy in the healthcare industry;
  • Ensuring that our database queries are optimized, and can scale;
  • Developing new features to move Confrere forward as a product.

Your colleagues

Dag-Inge is co-founder and Chief Technology Officer with a background in WebRTC. The rest of the engineering team consists of Ingvild, Jayne, Josep, Nienke, and Paweł. And because we work on interdisciplinary squads, you’ll also work closely with folks from product design, marketing & sales, and customer support.

Inclusive work environment & equal opportunity

We want to make video calling for everyone - and that means our team should be made up of all kinds of people. We welcome all applicants, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, physical appearance, religion, or lack thereof.

To get an impression of us you can read about our team, learn about how we work, and check out our posts on Medium or Twitter.

Work/life balance and remote-friendly

Confrere is a remote company, and you can work from anywhere in the EU/EEA/EFTA region. Due to our strict compliance requirements, we are unable to hire outside the EU/EEA/EFTA region at the moment. We hope this situation changes in the future.

  • We work 37.5-hour weeks. We are committed to balancing work with leisure, family, pets, and friends;
  • You have flexibility and freedom in how you set up the working day and when you want to work;
  • As we have no office, we offer co-working space memberships if you’d like to not work from home (present pandemic rules excluded). Not having a physical office doesn't stop us from socializing with our coworkers - we would love to tell you more about this!

Since Confrere is based in Norway, you can expect benefits aligned with Norwegian standards, such as:

Employees also have the opportunity to purchase shares in Confrere.

How to apply

Send an email to [email protected] with the subject "Software Engineer" and include the following in your application:

  • A bit about why you want to work at Confrere;
  • Which experiences/backgrounds/skills you have that you think are most relevant to this position;
  • Attachment/link to a CV (or LinkedIn page, or similar) containing your relevant background/experiences;
  • To give us a sense of how you think about things, tell us about a time you really enjoyed yourself while solving (or failing at solving!) a technical problem (1-2 paragraphs is enough).

We aim to close applications by May 30th, but will be evaluating applications continuously. We encourage you to apply sooner rather than later!
