Etsy is the global marketplace for unique and creative goods. We build, power, and evolve the tools and technologies that connect entrepreneurs with buyers around the world. As an Etsy employee, you can do the work you love, be yourself, and make an impact in the lives of millions. Our commitments to diversity and inclusion, team culture and the spaces where we work all reflect our mission to keep commerce human. We're large enough that you'll focus on meaningful challenges at scale, but small enough that you can make a significant impact.
Etsy is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Buying Confidence initiative.
You’ll join an initiative that enables buyers to choose a particular item by providing them with the right information at just the right time. The Buying Confidence initiative works on improving the buyer experience throughout the Etsy marketplace, focusing on our buyer flows on Etsy's most trafficked pages. We work to reduce friction for our buyers, making sure they have an easy and inspiring experience throughout their buying journey.
There are 4 product engineering squads within the initiative, and you would work with 1 or more of them.
Here’s a taste of the user problems we’re solving:
How can we leverage PWA tech to improve the buyer experience on mobile devices?
What is the optimal number of reviews for an Etsy listing?
What information does a buyer want to see on an item page?
How and when should we surface information about carbon neutral shipping?
Upon final interview rounds, the team would partner with you to find the best team fit within the Buying Confidence initiative.
Etsy is built on Google Cloud Platform, and our Web stack runs on PHP and MySQL. On the front end, we’ve developed and migrated to our own design system, and mostly build interfaces using React. We were one of the earliest and are one of the largest practitioners of continuous deployment in the industry. We also use a lot of other technologies and languages, and you’ll be able to help us shape their direction in the future.
This is a full-time role based in Brooklyn, NY or remote. We’re also open to remote hires within all U.S. states except Hawaii and Alaska.
About the Role:
We’re looking for engineers with experience building scalable and resilient critical path platform services. You should be customer-focused, data-driven, and passionate about collaborating with your teammates and peers. Your responsibilities include:
Building products and experiences for people buying and selling with Etsy
Being a senior technical leader and critical hire on the squad and will help others around you grow as developers and be successful
Taking the lead on directing and implementing solutions to complex, unscoped problems
Collaborating with our cross-functional teams and business partners across Etsy
Developing and maintaining critical path product services
Finding opportunities to improve our architecture, operability or capabilities
Using data to validate your hypotheses and inform your decision making
About You:
5+ years of experience building web technologies and working on large scale, high performance and fault tolerant systems
Thrive when faced with customer and product-focused challenges
You have a “leave it better than you found it” mentality, and are willing to work with and improve on code you did not originally write.
Love to experiment and use data to drive decision-making.
Code quality is deeply important to you, and you can lead a team in improving the quality of existing codebases
Have a knack for organization and breaking down large problems into smaller ones
You’re opinionated about what, and how, to build systems but empathetic to your colleagues
You’ve mentored engineers at a variety of levels throughout their career
You are a mindful, transparent and thoughtful communicator
